Tour Providence with Betty and DavidThe photo is dated 1920s, so this is is probably Exchange Place as Betty and David would have seen it stepping out of Union Station. Providence City Hall is at right. An earlier (1906) photo of City Hall, but it hasn't changed much, even today. The statue of Columbus, however, is peripatetic; it has been moved at least twice since 1906. Exchange Place, 1920s, as seen from the front of City Hall. It is now Kennedy Plaza and there is a park around the Civil War memorial in the center. Most of the buildings to the right no longer exist. However, the white building "straight on" is the Main Post Office and still there. This is Union Station taken from Exchange Place. The buildings still exist, but are now used for offices while the trains go elsewhere. The Rhode Island State House. Coming out from Union Station, it would have been behind them. The Arcade, the oldest enclosed shopping mall in the United States, built 1828. This is Westminster Street circa 1906. The clothing, vehicles, and signs would have changed, but the buildings were still there in 1928. Had Betty walked on from the Majestic and crossed Empire Street, she would have walked directly in front of the Providence Public Library. This is 1906, but you can already see the trolley lines.
